Review-

This is an intriguing, if somewhat of a slow-burn, psychological thriller.

There is plenty of tension from the outset and the author does a credible job of building intrigue as the reader ponders on who could be behind the events in Ava’s everyday life.

There is an element of repetition as the author tries to convey the turmoil within Ava’s mind as she questions how much of what is happening is real and how much is a figment of her imagination.

The continual reference to events ten years earlier, but with very little being revealed until late in the story can be a little frustrating as it clear that the past holds some relevance, but the reader is kept in the dark as to its significance for most of the plot.

One of the strengths of the narrative is that it’s hard to work out who the culprit could be until the big reveal and there are plenty of twists along the way to keep the reader guessing.

** Blog Tour ** The Lost Daughters of Ukraine- Erin Litteken

I’m honoured to be one of today’s stops on the blog tour for ‘The Lost Daughters of Ukraine.’

A story of the strength of the human spirit, the personal cost of conflict and how love can be found even in the darkest times.

Summer 1941. War rages in Europe. The Germans march towards Ukraine. Halya, Liliya and Vika are no strangers to sorrow. They lost family during the Holodomor, loved ones in Stalin’s purges, and war
looms once more on the horizon.

Vika lives in fear for her children. She and her sister survived the terror famine by leaving their whole family behind. Now, years later, many believe the Germans will free them from the Soviets, but she’s
not so sure. Should they stay in Volhynia or flee the approaching Eastern front?

Liliya has lost too much in her 17 years. As those around her join the resistance, Liliya wonders how she can fight for her friends, family, and country. When the choice is made for her, can she find the will to survive and protect those still with her?

Twelve-year-old Halya is struggling to discover who she is. But as the war escalates, can her mother Katya’s tactics keep her safe from the Nazi soldiers rounding up slave laborers? How can a child
survive the horrors of war on her own?

These daughters of Ukraine will face devastation and loss as they fight to survive and protect the ones they love.

A gripping page-turner of love, loss and resilience for fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz.

Review-

This is a psychological thriller that starts slowly but builds up to a blistering pace with plenty of twists and unexpected turns on the way!

It’s a sign of a well-written plot when you can eventually start to piece together who you think might be responsible, only to be blindsided by another sting in the tale.

I had my suspicions about half way through as to who the culprit might be and my guess turned out to be right but I had no idea until the very end just how all of the threads connected. Even then, there was still another shock to the story and helped to explain details from the opening chapter. A definite ‘ah-ha’ moment!

Very cleverly written and with a tension that you could easily imagine translating well to a screen production.

There are several character with less than endearing qualities and almost all have secrets they are keen to hide. Cassie, however, is intensely likeable and it is impossible not to empathise with her plight.

A thoroughly entertaining read.

Eva Glyn writes escapist relationship-driven fiction with a kernel of truth at its heart. She loves to travel and finds inspiration in beautiful places and the stories they hide.

Her last holiday before lockdown was a trip to Croatia, and the country’s haunting histories and gorgeous scenery have proved fertile ground, driven by her friendship with a tour guide she met there. His wartime story provided the inspiration for The Olive Grove and his help in creating a realistic portrayal of Croatian life has proved invaluable.

Her second novel set in the country, An Island of Secrets is a dual timeline looking back to World War 2, and although a contemporary
romance featuring mature main characters her third, The Collaborator’s Daughter, has its roots in that conflict too.

Eva lives in Cornwall, although she considers herself Welsh, and has been lucky enough to have been married to the love of her life for more than twenty-five years. She also writes as Jane Cable.

Review-

Poignant, atmospheric and utterly enthralling, this is another resounding triumph from Eva Glyn!

Not quite a dual timeline because of the scarcity of information available about World War II in Dubrovnik, as explained in the author’s notes at the end of the book, the narrative is nevertheless spilt over two time periods; 1944 and 2009/10.

There are so many strengths to this story. Eva Glyn has a wonderful way of creating not only vivid, authentic characters, but also depicts her settings with such descriptive clarity, you can picture the scenes in your mind. Dubrovnik and its’ islands, both during wartime and in the present day come alive in the pages.

The central character Fran, or Safranka as she was named when she was born, is a complex but extremely likeable protagonist. She has spent her life needing to be needed by others and her journey of self-discovery as she seeks to uncover her past is thoughtfully portrayed. It is also an interesting angle to have a more mature lead female.

Particularly heartwarming is the development of her relationship with Jadran, who similarly has his own demons to overcome. It is a joy to follow their rediscovery of romance later in life after both have endured such heartache.

The secondary characters within the plot all play a vital role, with Fran’s long term friend Parisa being the perfect antidote to her fretting. I also love the description of the traditional women sellers at the market who befriend Fran and welcome her with open arms. Even Eli, despite their unfortunate first encounter, ends up being a pivotal player in Fran’s discoveries.

It is also testament to the author, that although the content is harrowing and graphic in places, the historical aspect has clearly been thoroughly researched and fits authentically into the plot.

A truly wonderful read and one which I cannot recommend highly enough!

Review-

This is the first of this author’s work I’ve read but I’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for future releases now!

Written as a dual timeline, this is a sweeping historical mystery which is expertly woven together. Unlike some other novels in this genre, we are able to build up our knowledge of the main characters over successive chapters, rather than flitting from one story to the other and this works particularly well as the reader gains a real sense of what is happening both in the 1900s and the present day.

The cover is particularly striking and sets the scene of the novel perfectly. The author has clearly extensively researched the history of the Minoans in Crete and the archaeological dig to discover the Palace of Knossos, while the linking chapters detailing elements of Greek mythology and the story of Ariadne and the Minotaur gives this an extra special edge over other works of historical fiction.

Victorian society and values are similarly well portrayed as poor Alice has to suffer the indignity of a disastrous love choice before she is whisked away by her sympathetic aunt on a Grand Tour.

I liked the way in which family secrets were such an integral part of the plot in both timelines and felt this golden thread within the narrative was cleverly done to link the lives of Alice and Eloise beyond their interest in history.

A fascinating and evocative read. Highly recommended.

Review-

This was something of a departure from my usual reads, but I’ve always been fascinated with the story of Pompeii and so the synopsis immediately caught my attention.

I’m so glad it did! This is an exceptional tale; brilliantly told and worthy of many plaudits.

Written in a thoroughly engaging style but with a definite sense of historical accuracy, author Melissa Addey has created a piece of historical fiction that will live long in the memory.

I loved the fact that this was so much more than a recount of the building of the Flavian Amphitheatre (Colosseum) in Rome. It is a tale of loyalty, heartache, respect and integrity, whilst at the same time offering a perspective into some of the lesser known elements of Roman society at that time.

The portrayal of such strong female characters in Althea and Fausta, was particularly fascinating, supported by the seemingly forward-thinking for the time Marcus, who enabled them to flourish despite their perceived places in society as a slave and prostitute.

The detail surrounding the planning of the amphitheatre and the hundreds of civilians involved in bringing the ideas to fruition, as well as the description of the pestilence that threatened to scupper the endeavour was especially interesting and added a real human element to what is usually a glorified topic.

I note that this is penned as the first in a Colosseum series. I will certainly be keeping my eyes peeled for future releases!

Review-

The synopsis on this one had my interest piqued from the outset and there was enough suspense within the writing to keep me second guessing as to Gail’s motives.

The twist to this one is undoubtedly in the format. Written as a series of transcribed interviews, email exchanges and diary entries, the reader is able to gradually build up ideas about the central characters, whilst the author is able to carefully reveal twists and turns along the way.

In this current age of social media frenzy and the ever-increasing number of ‘influencers’, choosing this writing style fits perfectly and is relatable to today’s lifestyles. I also liked the stark contrast between Ris and Gail’s lives, despite the circumstances that see them thrown together.

It’s a slow burn of a read and it takes a few ‘chapters’ to work out who is narrating and who is who, but once you overcome this, it’s easy to follow.

An intriguing read and a novel concept!

Review-

This is my first foray into books from this author and I was enticed in by two of my favourite things in Venice and books!

It didn’t start the way I expected but I found myself fascinated by the recount of the central character Luna’s early life as part of a commune and her travels with her mother. I loved the contrast between the strong sense of community and kindred spirits and Luna’s wanderlust, even after her mum had decided to put roots down in one place.

The strength of friendship between Luna and Gigi, who meet while travelling is a key component of the storyline as Luna wrestles with the past to find herself.

I loved the development of Luna’s character and how Gigi was used as a vehicle to allow her to not only explore her hidden feelings, but also to open her eyes to new horizons and possibilities.

The bookshop and Luna’s love of literature is a focal point of the story and provides the perfect metaphor as she seeks to rummage through the tidbits of the past in order to discover her future.

An enjoyable read.

This is an epic tale that cannot fail to pull at your heart strings!

Recounted across three ‘books’, spanning different periods of time, ‘The Officer’s Wife’ is not only a story of war and the heartache it can bring, but also a tale of resilience and the sheer determination of one woman to succeed against all odds.

The character of Vivi is portrayed exceptionally and the author should be commended for the way in which she allows her character to develop and triumph in the face of seemingly constant adversity.

It’s difficult not to have mixed feelings about Nathan, given the horrors he has endured as part of the war effort but also his duplicity in the treatment of his wife once he is discharged from active duty.

The dynamics between the varying characters and the interwoven historical detail, alongside elements of class attitudes, lends a real authenticity to the plot, and leaves you rooting for Vivi to find peace.

A must-read for all fans of historical fiction and romance!

This is an absolute gem of a book!

Thoroughly engaging and written in an easy, fluent style that draws you in from the outset, author Charlie Dean has pulled together the perfect combination of ingredients to make this a hit.

It deals with some difficult themes in the present day chapters but also includes plenty of light-hearted, relatable moments and everyday observations to strike the balance.

It’s incredibly up to date, with references to life post-COVID, as well as events such as the deaths of Olivia Newton-John and Darius Danish, but perhaps its’ greatest triumph is the plentiful throwback references to the 90s.

I lost count of the number of times I found myself smiling or nodding my head in recognition of a memory from the era. Whether it was the desire to get hold of a copy of Judy Blume’s ‘Forever’, the tragedy of never owning a Mr Frosty, the old library system pre-technology where you checked out a book by the little card at the front or the envy of a friend who had a soda stream at their house, readers of a certain age will undoubtably find something relatable.

Then, there is the exploration of the foray into first love and all of the emotion it entails.

There is genuinely so much to like about this book. If it’s not already, be sure to add it to your ‘to-be-read’ list!
