Room- Emma Donoghue

A compelling read from the start. The story is narrated through the eyes of five year old Jack who lives locked up in a room with Ma. As the reason for this becomes clear and the story unfolds, the book becomes a fascinating psychological insight into how adults and children cope with trauma. It is also a powerful testament to a mother’s love and just how far someone is prepared to go to protect their child from evil and give them the best possible experiences in life, even in desperate circumstances. And yet it’s a simple, uncomplicated read due to the clever twist of telling the tale through Jack words rather than Ma’s. A real page-turner!
