Review-

This is the third book in The Three Fry Sisters series, and while there is enough recap included about the previous two for it to be read as standalone, I would equally recommend reading from beginning to really understand each sister well.

It is easy to imagine this being turned into a tv dramatisation , such is the vivacity of characters and storyline.

The chapters focus on individual characters and their locations across the world and it can take a while to keep up with even if you’ve read earlier books but you soon find yourself able to tell one sister and their personalities from another.

This book is rich in history, from the political situation in Egypt, the inclusion of small details, such as references to Lord Carnarvon and Tutankhamen’s tomb excavation, to the Great Depression in Canada and the Spanish Civil War.

Inclusion of relevant real-life characters, such as members of the Hollywood elite from the era like Groucho Marx or reference to F Scott Fitzgerald injects a sense of realism and adds another dimension to the narrative.

We learn more in this story about the next generation too, with more focus on the characters Shani and Lulu and their life experiences as a result of the actions of their respective mothers. I found Shani’s letters to her mum after arriving in England particularly poignant, especially in light of Jessie’s subsequent decision not to return home as originally planned.

I loved Hettie’s character. Her exchanges with Christina provide humour and realism and her use of dialect is a wonderful contrast with the very formal language used by her employer.

Deceit and deception prevail in all three books in the series and you’re always left wondering just how many more lies can be told or when things will begin to unravel.

The three sisters are markedly different in personality in many ways, although there are some distinct similarities between them.

I found Etta on the whole to be thoroughly dislikable; her selfishness seems to know no bounds. Celie, on the other hand was probably the sister I warmed to the most, empathising completely with the situation in which she finds herself and yet admiring how resilient she remained and determined to see through what she had started. Jessie was something of a mixed bag. I initially loved the way she stands up to her mother in law and felt for her when tragedy struck but as the storyline progressed, I became increasingly disgruntled with her decision making.

While Christina is undeniably the most devious character, I could understand motives to some extent and did enjoy how cleverly she plays Monsieur DuRose at his own game.

This is another stunning read from Adrienne Chinn and I’m already eagerly anticipating the final book of the series.

But fending for herself in the Black Country town of Wednesbury is not as easy as she expected, and it soon hits her that without help she will quickly be hungry and cold.

Review-

This is the second book of Lindsey Hutchinson’s books I’ve read having previously reviewed ‘The Bad Penny’. It’s easy to see why she has been dubbed the Queen of Black Country sagas, such is the quality of the writing and the authenticity of the setting which comes alive in the pages.

I loved both Alice and BJ’s characters and how, despite being so different, they learned so much from each other and came to support each other when they first met. It’s hard to believe at times how young they are when you consider their resourcefulness and tenacity in the toughest of circumstances.

The writing style makes this an incredibly easy read and it’s impossible not to get drawn into the depiction of the Victorian era, which is full of historical detail, including references to the Workhouse and the penal system where convicted criminals were deported to Australia, regardless of age.

As this is the first of a trilogy, there are inevitably some questions left unanswered and I’m already eagerly awaiting the release of the next instalment.

Eva Glyn fell in love with Croatia during her first holiday there in 2019; the incredible scenery, the delicious food, the country’s dramatic twentieth century history all played their part, but most of all it was the friendliness of the people.

One of these was tour director Darko Barisic, who told an incredible story about growing up in underground shelters during the war in the 1990s, and she knew she had to write a book around his experiences. This became her first Croatian novel, The Olive Grove, and she and Darko have become good friends and he continues to advise her on all aspects of Croatia.

Eva delves into Croatian history and everyday life for her inspiration, and visits the country as often as she can, having uncovered so many stories by talking to local people. Travel in general is her passion, followed closely by food and wine, which also find their way between her pages.

Although Welsh by birth she now lives in Cornwall with the man she met and fell in love with almost thirty years ago. She also writes as Jane Cable.

Review-

Firstly, I must talk about the cover! What a wonderful depiction of a picturesque setting that cannot fail to make you want to dive straight into the book and immerse yourself in Croatia!

I’m a huge fan of Eva Glyn’s books having previously read and reviewed The Olive Grove, An Island of Secrets and The Collaborator’s Daughter (use the search bar to discover).

I loved the sound of The Dubrovnik Book Club and really enjoyed how it became central to bringing the lives of the four main characters together.

Claire, Luna, Vedran and Karelia all bring their own hang ups and secrets to the table and the author cleverly weaves in the bonding and forming of relationships through the book club meet ups, allowing each person to let down their guard and conquer their demons.

As always with Eva Glyn’s books, the historical detail and descriptions of Croatia and in this case, Dubrovnik in particular, give the reader a real sense of place and time. I always find myself wanting to visit there after reading about the stunning scenery and rich history.

There’s a slightly different feel to this book compared to her earlier ones, with the inclusion of Covid and attitudes towards LGBTQ+ lending it a more contemporary vibe. I also found the language used by some of the characters to be more coarse than I remember from previous books, although this is merely an observation and not a criticism.

A hugely enjoyable tale of heartache, prejudice and fear, but ultimate one of breaking down barriers and moving on.

Review-

This is the fourth book from AnneMarie Brear I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing, having previously read The Soldier’s Daughter, The Tobacconist’s Wife and The Waterfront Lass, the latter of which is the first book in this Waterfront Lass trilogy.

While The Dock Girl’s Shame references characters from the first book, this can easily be read as a standalone (although I’d highly recommend reading both!) and focuses on the tale of Lorrie, the daughter of a boat yard owner.

Set in Yorkshire in the Victorian era, the author transports you to the heart of Wakefield with her vivid descriptions of the landscape and changing times, making you feel completely immersed in the setting. The customs and traditions of the time are well researched and indicative of the beliefs held by men at that time about a woman’s role in society.

Lorrie is a wonderful main female character who is determined to stand on her own two feet, having run the accounts for the boatyard since she was a teenager and who is respected amongst the workers. She isn’t afraid to take on those such as Oswald Lynch and voice her opinions on the running of the business, even though he believes it is not her place to do so. She certainly faces plenty of challenges in her life but is strong and resilient and I warmed to her immediately.

The storyline is engaging from the outset, particularly with the introduction of Matteo Falcone and I found myself continually wanting to read ‘just one more chapter’ to find out what happened next.

A hugely enjoyable read and now I’m eagerly awaiting the final book of the trilogy!

** Blog Tour ** Tour Wars- Carla Luna

I’m delighted to be one of today’s stops on the final day of the blog tour for ‘Tour Wars.’

Ten days, two rivals, and a busload of tourists. How bad could it be?

For archaeologist Emilia Flores, landing a fellowship to work at the ancient ruins of Pompeii in Italy is a dream come true. The only catch? She’ll be digging alongside her infuriating nemesis, TJ Mayer, who’s been a constant thorn in her side.

TJ isn’t about to pass up the Pompeii project. Sure, he’ll be stuck working with Emilia, but he thrives on challenging her. And he hasn’t forgotten that secret kiss they shared at an archaeology conference last winter.

Though unearthing Pompeii’s treasures might be a dream, student debt is a nightmare that never takes a vacation. So, when TJ and Emilia are offered a lucrative side job to lead a ten-day tour through Southern Italy, they grudgingly agree to tackle it together.

Forced to set aside their animosity and work as a team, they forge an unexpected camaraderie. As the sparks between them ignite, their rivalry gives way to passion, making it easy to forget their years of fierce competition. But what happens when the tour ends and the real world steps in?

Tour Wars is a rivals-to-lovers, grumpy/sunshine romance featuring a nerdy cinnamon roll hero, a strong-willed Latina heroine, and plenty of hotel hijinks.

Review-

This is the fourth book of Carla’s I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing, having previously read two of the Blackwood Cellar series as well as Troy Story, the second book in this Romancing the Ruins series.

Although a continuation of the previous book, this can easily be read as a stand-alone. Set in and around Pompeii and Southern Italy, it piqued my interest straight away.

The author’s experience as an archaeologist comes through in the pages, from details of the excavations to descriptions of the ruins themselves, lending a real sense of authenticity to the narrative.

The tension between main characters Emilia and TJ and the obvious underlying attraction between them is the main thread of the storyline. The verbal sparring between them is highly entertaining but in this one I also loved the thawing in their animosity towards each other.

There are plenty of other characters who each bring something to the plot, from creepy Luca to the wonderfully nicknamed ‘Golden Girls’.

A thoroughly enjoyable, easy read which I found myself racing through.

A Gilded Age Retelling of My Fair Lady

Arriving into English society from the drawing rooms of New York, Miss Florence Wakechild desires nothing less than the marriage her father is so desperately seeking for her. Clayton Wakechild desires nothing more than finding a suitable husband for his daughter – a husband of noble birth and title no less. No ‘new money’ here.

Frustrated with her father’s obsession with the British aristocracy, Florence comes up with a plan. If she can train an ordinary working man to behave like a viscount and fool her father, she can prove to him a title is meaningless.

It’s a straightforward plan, but the man Florence chooses is Ned Blake, a man who will open her eyes in a way she couldn’t have imagined. As Ned’s hands gently guide her across the ballroom floor, the last thing Florence expects to feel is something… real.

With his past catching up with him, Ned seizes the opportunity to lie low, if only briefly, but will the secrets he’s keeping destroy the chance of happiness he’d never imagined?

Mia is telling me a story. It’s about a princess, who lives in a castle, on a street that bears a remarkable resemblance to ours. About a kind old lady who’s the queen. I’m distracted for a moment by her little hand softly slipping into mine. My daughter. My angel.

But then she says something that pulls me from my reverie. She says that the queen doesn’t treat the princess well. She punishes her and doesn’t let her eat anything…

Helen, my neighbour, has been so good to me. And more importantly, she’s so good with the children. Surely this is just another story of Mia’s, just make believe.

Because if it’s not, maybe my dad was right all along: I was never good enough to be a mother, and I’ve let my precious children down in the worst way possible.

Review-

This is a compelling tale of one woman’s struggle with single parenthood told through her stream of consciousness as she constantly worries about whether she is a ‘good enough mother’.

It’s easy to feel sympathy for the main character Jess. Losing her mother at a young age and estranged from her father when she fell pregnant as a teenager, it’s no wonder she has doubts about her parenting skills.

It’s similarly no surprise that she clings to her neighbour Helen, who reminds her of her mum, and naively places her trust in her to support her with the care of the children while she is at work.

I found myself second guessing Helen and Robert’s motives all the way through and I’m certain this is a deliberate ploy by the author.

Jess’ worries about her children will resonate with parents ; her concerns are ones we all will have felt at one time or another.

I also enjoyed the inclusion of Mia’s ‘storytelling’ as a way of adding more intrigue to the plot.

Review-

This is billed as a psychological suspense rather than a thriller and it’s an apt description. Told through the thoughts of the main character, Mrs Langdon, this is a claustrophobic account of her experiences as she struggles to unravel what is happening to her.

It’s hard to reveal much about the plot without giving away spoilers but it’s a cleverly written narrative that keeps you guessing about the motives of the different characters and I found myself constantly speculating as I read.

An intriguing read despite the difficult subject matter.

This is a fascinating dual timeline story of the lesser known elder sister of Nell Gwyn, Rose.

I was particularly drawn to Rose’s story and the historical aspect of the narrative, although I did like the present day parallels between Jess and her sister Tavy.

It’s a period of history I know little about and I definitely found myself immersed in the period and wanting to discover more.

I also really enjoyed the dynamics between Jess and Ethan and how they seemed able to connect to the past.

A thoroughly enjoyable read.

If dark, twisty thrillers are your thing, then you need to get this added to your ‘to be read’ list!

This is the first book I’ve read from this author. I loved the sound of the plot and found myself gripped from the first page.

It’s every family’s worst nightmare; the thought of losing a child, presumably kidnapped and not knowing whether they are alive or dead. And yet, for the Drummond family, their nightmare situation becomes even worse when it seems their long lost daughter has been found.

I loved the way the storyline built up possible theories as to who might have been responsible for the kidnapping and how gradually things began to unravel before a chilling climax.

There are lots of potential triggers within this one as the characters each have their own demons to deal with, but it makes for a thrilling read despite the dark themes.

I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for future releases from this author!

With thanks to the author, Zoe at Zoolou’s Book Tours and Inkubator books for the opportunity to participate in the tour.
